The Atlantic Pounding the Narrow Isthmus on the Far Side
Hurricane Beryl obliterated the fragile crescent of sand that formed the perfect bay of Salt Whistle. In minutes the150 mile an hour winds, driving rain, and pounding surf breached the land that held back the Atlantic. The beach was stripped of its curve of powder fine sand and palm trees. As the Atlantic poured in, it brought with it enormous boulders instead. The restoration of Salt Whistle Bay is a huge priority for the 350 residents of Mayreau and for the Grenadines as they hope to recreate the livelihood of the region, tourism and fishing.
When I visit the region in February I hope to be able to report on the progress of the restoration.
